What is SEO Anyway?

SEO or search engine optimization is the process of improving the visibility of your web pages, web content, articles, blog posts, or other content. The goal of SEO is higher placement in search engine result pages without necessarily having to buy ads or traffic.

The legitimate or white hat methods of SEO include the use of keywords, keyword density, the use of tags, using a search engine simulator, well-written content (yes, grammar, punctuation, and spelling matter), and duplicate content detection tools such as Plagium or Copyscape.

You do not have to spend a fortune to get natural traffic to your online content. The proper use of keywords and tags will go a long way towards achieving your goals for traffic to your blog posts, webpages, or articles.

There are a lot of free tools out there to help you detect even accidental duplicate content, and once you start making some money from your content you can even invest in a paid method of duplicate content detection (such as Copyscape).  There are also several free methods and paid methods for spinning or rewriting content so that it appears to be your original work.

Types of Cheap Search Engine Optimization

Cheap search engine optimization can involve either doing the SEO work yourself or hiring an SEO firm that doesn’t charge a lot for their services. Remember to vet the outside firms that you are considering hiring to do your SEO for you if you choose that route.

You should be paying particular attention to what type of tactics they use to get your results placed higher; if they use black hat techniques such as keyword stuffing, invisible space, doorway pages, and the like you should run as fast as you can in the other direction.

While black hat techniques often work in the short run, they become apparent to the search engines relatively quickly.  Yahoo and Google will penalize those who are caught using blackhat SEO techniques; in Google’s case the penalty may go so far as to not show results at all for organizations that use black hat techniques.

There are some risks involved when you are doing your SEO yourself, and if you do choose that path you will need to remember that it is not a ‘one time and you’re done’ process. You will need to be patient.

You will also need to be willing to commit both your time and your resources (mostly monetary but not always) to the SEO process on a long term basis in order to see any results at all. You must commit to SEO over a relatively long period of time, and by that I mean you need to provide fresh content on a regular basis. It may take months to see the results of your SEO activities reflected in your search engine page results, particularly if your website, business, or other organization is either new to the arena or is smaller in scope.
