What is an SEO Checklist?

The most basic definition of an SEO checklist is that it is simply a list of what you should do before, after, and during your SEO (search engine optimization) campaigns.

The first thing you should do is decide on your keywords and where you will place them.

Keywords need to be related to the content of your article; as well, they need to be placed in certain spots of your content so that they will attract search engine spiders.

You should use keywords in your titles, your urls, your anchor text, your headings, at the beginning of your documents, in your ALT tags, and in your meta tags.

Another thing to remember about the placing of your keywords is the proximity; for example if you are targeting cat food, it’s best to have the two words together. You can always have cats in one line and food in another because that will count as a keyword, but not as much as having the two words together well.

The second part of your checklist is your links, whether they are outbound, inbound, or internal. Don’t use the same anchor text all the time, because Google will penalize you with a lower search engine ranking for doing this. Don’t use the links from poor sites and those with low page rank; don’t use link farms either.

The best links to use are those that are from sites that are similar to you, but remember to check the age of your links, the anchor text, and the lack or presence of keywords on the pages you link to. Backlinks are also very important but again consider the quality of your backlinks (age, anchor text, keywords, etc.) rather than quantity. Links from good quality directories such as Yahoo or DMOZ can be used to your benefit, but don’t just load up on links from any old directory.

Meta tags are the third part of your checklist. Meta tags are HTML or XHTML elements that are used to provide additional structured data about your webpage.  They are mostly ignored by Google but are still important with other engines such as Bing or Yahoo.

Content is the fourth listing on your checklist, even though it’s probably the most important factor.  You need to have well-written, unique, relevant, and fresh content.  Make sure that you aren’t copying other peoples’ content, even accidentally (on purpose is worse though).

Change your content frequently, and make it relevant to what is going on in your niche.  You can also use font size to direct attention to specific areas of your content, but use this trick sparingly. The same is true for the formatting of content; you should use formats such as bold, italic, or underlining sparingly because they lose their ‘punch’ when overused. Recent documents or those that have been recently updated are the most desirable.
