If you have been living under a rock for the last few years, or you are new to Search Engine Optimization(SEO), you need to learn which strategies are out dated.
SEO has changed quite a bit over the years, especially in the past two years. This is due to Google changing the way they rank websites. And, since Google is responsible for more than half the internet traffic, what they do most SEO professionals follow.
The new age of internet marketing includes social media and better quality content. It doesn’t include some of the old strategies you may still be using, and the last thing you want to do is try to get ranked for the keyword “mosquito” only to find that your strategy will never work. Here are some things to get rid of.
Outdated SEO Strategies to Avoid
1. Fast Link Building
If you are trying to blast out thousands of low quality backlinks and expect to gain high ranking, you will be sorely disappointed. This strategy will only help you become one of the many blacklisted sites that Google won’t show in the rankings at all. If you really want to gain ranking on the search engines, ditch any part of your strategy that includes more than 100 backlinks per day to your site.
2. Spun or Low Quality Content
Those using spinning software should stop immediately. Google has targeted this type of content specifically and, even if you are using it to build web 2.0 sites or other blogs that link to your main site, you will get penalized. This content looks like spam. If you are using spun content or buying low quality content, you need to stop in a hurry.
3. Main Keyword Phrase Usage
Many employed a strategy that included using the main keyword phrase in the title, first header, second header, third header, first paragraph, last paragraph and throughout the content. This strategy is now known as over optimizing and can land you in Google’s penalty box for good. Make sure you keep your density under 3% or you will find out that you don’t rank very well at all.
4. Link Wheels
Link wheels have been around for a long time. These include creating many sites, web 2.0 properties and using articles to build a network that includes links from one site to another. This is supposed to feed link juice to the main site, but this strategy is certainly outdated. Link wheels are no longer worth your investment.
Avoid these four strategies, and you will be well on your way to finding your site higher in the rankings. If you also add in social media links and create content that the reader can actually use, ranking high will be significantly easier.
